Vikki Prior

Vikki Prior (Director & Principal Psychologist)

Vikki Prior is the Founder, Director and Principal Psychologist at Ringwood Psychology Pty Ltd.  She is a nationally accredited Psychologist and Sex Therapist, registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).  Vikki was on the Executive Committee and former Secretary of the Australian Society of Sexuality Educators, Researchers and Therapists (ASSERT), and is a current member of The Society of Australian Sexologists (SAS).  She has lectured for The Medical Register of Australia, at Monash Medical Centre and Melbourne University.  Vikki is committed to progressing the community’s understanding of mental and sexual health and enjoys presenting at national conferences and workshops.

Vikki’s counselling field requires training in a range of treatment techniques.  Her most predominant therapies are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy, Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Therapies, Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, and the various therapies involved in assisting with emotional regulation.  She often works from a trauma-focused lens and is an ND-Affirming therapist. Vikki’s ongoing professional goal is to strive for empathic understanding of her clients and their life experiences.  She believes that being a good psychologist requires passion for the field, developed insight, and a genuine fascination in human behaviour and connectivity.

Vikki focuses on her work on the impact of emotional dysregulation on relationships (eg recurring conflict and anger management issues), childhood trauma, addictions and compulsive behaviours. She is trained in delivering treatment to compulsive behaviours of a sexual nature (eg pornography, sex workers, excessive masturbation etc), as well as alcohol and drug misuse.  Due to the negative impact these behaviours can have on relationships, Vikki is also trained in the treatment of sexual dysfunctions (male and female), relationship and intimacy counselling.  She assists individuals to understand and control their behaviours, and works with couples to restore relationships damaged by betrayal and broken trust.

Vikki is a trained practitioner in emotional regulation techniques required for working with Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse. This area is a passion for Vikki. She is honoured to sit supportively with clients and guide them to unburden themselves with secrets they have kept silent, often for many years.

A research interest of Vikki’s is better understanding and educating the community on Neurodiversity. Whilst there have been considerable improvements, Vikki believes this is still not understood by society in a way that might improve tolerance and happiness in society. It remains often unrecognised in adult relationships which can wreak havoc on relationships and individuals. Vikki helps couples to recognise the origins of conflict cycles and to resolve persistent feelings of being unheard, not considered, disrespected and blamed for the behaviours of others.
